General information regarding the study of theology
In German-speaking countries, the study of theology is mainly oriented to the Christian religion. However, Catholic and Protestant theology only vary from each other in terms of content in a few respects. Much more important is the fundamental difference of the superior ecclesiastical entity. In general, the study of theology is offered as a Bachelor’s/Master’s degree and is aligned with the universities to a future career as a teacher in primary and secondary schools. Students learn the basics of the Christian religion and, in addition to mandatory educational courses, also attend modules covering the tenets of other religions. At the beginning of their studies, however, students must either opt for the Protestant or Catholic religion, which generally follows their own faith, as a rule. In the first semesters, the courses are structured very similarly. In addition to church history, theological ethics and practical theology, subjects such as canon law, religious education and the relationship to Judaism are covered in detail.
While dogmatic and liturgical studies play an important role in the Catholic theology, Protestant theology is more philosophically orientated. Possible specializations in higher semesters include Jewish Studies, which deals with the Jewish tradition, philosophy or biblical archeology. In addition to a teaching oriented degree, theology can also be studied at Christian colleges. The graduates of these universities often serve as pastors or staff in Christian communities. Job opportunities for theologians, however, also lie in the areas of nursing homes and hospitals, in church administration or in research, where biblical texts are analyzed. Many graduates go abroad and work in foreign aid.
What can we do for you as ghostwriters?
A thesis in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies is usually written at the university and deals with a theoretical question. Often, the topics of a bachelor’s or master’s thesis are focused in educational or didactic areas. Tips for a successful thesis in theology
For the successful completion of the study of theology and the subsequent entry into the profession, it is generally required that you yourself are a follower of the respective faith. In your career, you should also practice the Protestant or Catholic faith, and not only as part of your “job” as a minister, a teacher or hospital theologian. This commitment will testify to your authenticity and will make it easier to work with people in your employment environment. When approaching your thesis in theology, it makes sense to select a topic that is not only relevant in terms of research, but also arouses your personal interest. It is best to speak to your mentor at the university at an early stage to identify an interesting topic.
