General information on the pharmaceutical studies

Pharmacy students not only learn theoretical knowledge, but also spend a lot of time in the laboratory. From the first semester, they apply their knowledge gained in lectures and seminars in practical tests. In pharmaceutical studies, students learn about different drugs and deal with their effects on the human organism and with their preparation. Those things that cause illness are also on the timetable. Students must build basic knowledge in pharmaceutical subjects based on scientific and medical subjects. These include the pharmaceutical analysis, biology and technology. Possible specializations in the main area of study are as pharmaceutical/medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutical technology, clinical pharmacy, pharmacology/toxicology and pharmaceutical biology. In addition to regular lab work during the semester, students should have already taken an 8-week practical internship, which they will have attended during the holidays.

Similar to the study of medicine, the study of pharmaceutics is an examination course. During the 8-semester standard period of study, the 1st and 2nd State Exams are taken. This is followed by the practical year, during which the students will apply the knowledge acquired in theory and in laboratory practice in professional practice. In addition to six months in a pharmacy, students have the opportunity to work in the industry, business or a drug testing laboratory.

Tips for a successful thesis in pharmaceutical studies

A successful completion in pharmaceutics can open a whole world of professional opportunities. Regardless of whether you are aiming for a license as a pharmacist or are interested in an academic career or want to take a job in the private sector or industry, you should always choose a topic for your thesis that corresponds to your interests. Since the thesis is often written part-time, your topic should touch on your professional practice. The closer you are to the subject, the easier it will be for you to motivate yourself after a working day or for further research or theoretical questions.

Once you have an idea for a topic that interests you, you should have a meeting with your lecturer who supervised your dissertation at the university. While many faculties publish lists containing possible topics, many teachers are open to your own proposals and evaluate any interest you might display as generally positive. While working on your thesis, we recommend regularly talking to your mentor to clarify issues and to keep your supervisor up to date about the current status of your research.
